Purpose of a Wind Mitigation Inspection
A wind mitigation inspection is intended to identify and document wind-resistant construction features, which may:
Improve understanding of a home’s wind-related risk
Assist homeowners with maintenance and upgrade planning
Provide documentation that may be requested by insurers or contractors
Identify conditions that could increase vulnerability during windstorms
Insurance discounts are not guaranteed and vary by provider.
Scope of Inspection
The wind mitigation inspection includes a visual assessment of readily accessible areas, which may include:
Roof covering type and visible condition
Roof-to-wall connections (as visible from attic or accessible areas)
Roof decking attachment methods (where observable)
Gable end bracing or roof framing features (if accessible)
Presence of secondary water resistance (when visible)
General roof geometry and edge conditions
Inspections are performed without dismantling building components.
Limitations & Exclusions
Wind mitigation inspections are limited-scope, visual evaluations and are not engineering or code compliance inspections. The inspection does not include:
Structural engineering analysis or load calculations
Removal of roofing materials or finishes
Invasive or destructive testing
Verification of original construction methods not visible at time of inspection
Prediction of performance in future wind events
Concealed conditions may exist that cannot be identified during a visual inspection.
Access & Safety Disclaimer
Inspection findings are limited to areas that are readily accessible and safe to enter at the time of inspection. Weather, attic access, roof pitch, or safety concerns may restrict the scope of evaluation.
Further Evaluation & Improvements
If conditions are observed that may increase wind vulnerability, further evaluation by a licensed contractor, structural engineer, or roofing professional may be recommended. Any repairs or upgrades are outside the scope of this inspection.
Standards of Practice
Wind mitigation inspections are performed in accordance with applicable Washington State home inspection regulations and generally accepted home inspection standards of practice.
Disclaimer for Washington State
Washington State does not utilize a standardized wind mitigation insurance form. This inspection is provided for informational purposes and documentation only.
